Introduction to POU Modules

The aim of this portfolio is to illustrate the work that I have completed during the Professional Practice course. Additionally, it will demonstrate my understanding of the work completed and will expand on areas that I felt were not adequately grasped at the time.

The Professional Practice course consisted of 8 modules, where I was responsible for completing 8 different assignments attached to the respective modules. The different modules focussed on different areas of work and were, in my opinion, structured in an attempt to give an overview of the procedures that are followed in the construction industry. However, for various reasons, there were areas of information that I felt stood out as being more important to my understanding of the industry as a whole – these regions of work-covered have helped link all the different procedures together. This information will be shown under “Important Areas of Understanding” – the material in this portfolio will only show, briefly, some of the segments of information I found important in aiding my understanding, as the intention is not to copy existing notes. Extra information gained from interviews, practical training, guest lecturers or any additional sources will be illustrated under “Additional Understanding” with regards to each module. This will help draw commonalities between the different modules and show their significance with regards to Professional Practice.

My assignments were completed to the best of my abilities at the time, taking into account time constraints with any university degree. However, my understanding of the professional practices in the construction industry has developed hugely through the completion of my assignments. As a result, I have included a “Critical Review of the Assignment” for each module to address my mistakes made in the assignments and have addressed corrections where possible.

The Professional Practice course is aimed at arming us with the necessary tools needed to be able to run our own businesses one day – successfully, ethically, efficiently and with a high degree of client satisfaction. This course is directly related to real-world situations and the importance of it is vital for the success of future endeavours.
